Customer Objective
The project started when a leading manufacturer of drawworks (and related drilling equipment for the oil and gas industry) identified demand in the oilfield market for a hydraulic gerotor pump that was no longer available. The original pump manufacturer decided to shut down their manufacturing line and obsolete the pump after nearly 30 years of production. To address this opportunity, the OEM chose Cascon to engineer and manufacture a drop-in replacement pump that would perform as well as, or better than, the previous one. The new pump would be required to:
- Serve as a drop-in replacement for previous pump
- Add reversible functionality
- Incorporate design features and materials suited to relatively low production rates
Cascon Solution
While we are often asked to protect our customers’ technical trade secrets when designing high performance pumps and hydraulic motors for oil, gas and mining industries, this customer planned to resell the requested product as a catalog item replacement – and technical details were not highly confidential.
In order to optimize cost for the expected production volumes, Cascon designed and tooled sand castings for the pump’s cast-iron housings at one of its many casting suppliers. We then planned to complete final machining of the housings in our factory on state-of-the-art, multi-pallet machining centers to allow for variations in production volume.
A case hardened shaft and through-hardened powdered metal gerotor pump element were designed to complete the solution, providing a commercially viable solution for our customer’s business plan. The customer now supplies the pump, along with their other equipment, to the oil and gas industry.
