Objectives

A cooling systems manufacturer specializing in thermal management solutions to the aerospace industry came to Cascon to design two new high performance coolant pumps to support a new Active Electronically Scanned Combat Radar system for a military jet fighter application. The primary objective of their development effort was to improve the overall effectiveness of their cooling system by improving pump efficiency. In addition to improved efficiency, the interconnect features of new pump must exactly match the current design for drop replacement capability.

Solutions

Cascon developed a solution that meets current envelop and interconnect requirements, but also significantly reduces heat load to the cooling system.  Cascon’s custom pump solution features a positive displacement, fixed clearance, gerotor type pumping element driven by an aerospace grade 115 VAC, 400 Hz, 3-phase electric drive motor.  The motor and pump rotors both operate flooded in the PAO working fluid.  Two pumps circulate PAO coolant through two independent cooling loops of the system at the desired operating pressure.
