Step 2 – Prototype Build and Design Verification
Two or more prototypes are manufactured to ensure that the pump design meets all requirements and to provide a final check on mechanical and electrical fit-up and other interface requirements. The customer may elect to have Cascon complete qualification testing or elect to qualify the design at a system level. Prototypes are essential to design validation in support of production level manufacturing of the pump.
Pricing for prototype hardware is intended to cover Cascon’s direct manufacturing costs and cost for purchased components, but does not recover the non-recurring costs for design engineering, analysis, test procedures, program management, etc. These costs are typically absorbed by Cascon as our investment in the future success of the program.
The manufacturing lead time to produce prototype pumps will range from 12-16 weeks depending on shop loading at the time the project is released to manufacturing. In some cases (such as highly specified pumps intended for an Aerospace application), more time is needed to develop prototype hardware.
“Cascon custom designed and prototyped a precision gear pump to supply lube and sealing oil to the compressor internals in a one-g/zero-g-capable lube system for two long life space cryocoolers. Their level of dedication and professionalism was exemplary. The care they took in the design and testing was first class. This pump – which performed flawlessly on a recent shuttle mission, meeting all operational requirements – will be our candidate of choice when we develop these cryocoolers on a commercial level.”
